Poisoning Hazards for Winter
As the temperature drops there is more to be concerned about than colds and the flu. Many chemicals used in the winter can pose a poison risk.
- Always read and follow the instructions to avoid an accidental overdose.
- Check the active ingredients section on the drug facts section of the label. Do not use 2 medicines at the same time that contain the same or similar ingredients.
- Never increase the dose or take it more frequently than instructed.
- Never give medicine to a child that is intended for adult use.
- Keep alcohol up, away and out of sight from children. One sip could be harmful to a child.
- Holiday plants such as holly, mistletoe, Jerusalem cherry and bittersweet are all poisonous. These holiday plants should not be placed where children can reach them. Watch for dried berries that may have fallen to the floor.
- Inspect toys and holiday décor for chipping or worn paint. Antiques or foreign-made items may contain lead.
- Keep items containing button batteries or high-powered magnets away from small children. If swallowed, they can be extremely dangerous.
- Check your child’s list twice and remove toys that aren’t right for their age or are just plain dangerous. Make it a habit to review toy recall notices before purchasing new or used toys at Recalls.gov.
- Do install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
- Do have fuel burning appliances regularly inspected and maintained – including hot water heaters, furnaces, gas ranges, dryers, chimneys and fireplaces.
- Do leave your home immediately if your detector sounds and call 911 or the Poison Helpline, 1-800-222-1222.
- Don’t use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove or other gasoline or charcoal‒burning device inside your home, basement or garage. When using outside, keep these items 20 feet from any window, door or vent.
- Don’t run a vehicle inside an attached garage, even if you leave the door open.
- Don’t heat your house with a gas oven.
- Always store antifreeze and windshield washer solution in its original container, locked up and away.
- Clean up any spills or leaks immediately. These are poisonous to pets too.
- Store these products up, away and out of reach of children and pets.
- Remove shoes before coming inside to avoid bringing these products indoors.
- Wipe off pet’s paws and fur as soon as they come inside to prevent dryness and irritation.
